*The Galapagos Short-eared Owl is a species endemic to the Galapagos Islands. It is related to short-eared owls found worldwide, but can be clearly distinguished from its conspecifics not only by size. In the course of evolution, the Galapagos Short-eared Owl has developed quite surprising hunting techniques, which vary depending on the habitat on the islands. If it shares the island with a Galapagos hawk, which is much larger and more dominant, the Galapagos Short-eared Owl shifts its hunting exclusively to the night. On other islands, it hunts during the day and at night. It has also developed a special strategy to hunt petrels: the petrels nest in extremely well-protected places and are much faster and more agile in flight than owls. So in the normal way, the Galapagos Short-eared Owl has no chance. Therefore, it watches the petrels and notes where they leave their nest. Near the nest, the owl lies in wait and attacks the petrels as soon as they leave the nest.
